# Android SDK

The Ada Android SDK is a Kotlin library that you can use to [embed Ada in your Android app](/messaging/android/getting-started). It ships as a single Maven Central artifact, `cx.ada:messaging-android`, and provides settings and actions that customize the behavior of your AI Agent. You can do things like:

* Embed the conversation in your own layout, a full-screen activity, or a dialog
* Programmatically set the AI Agent language
* Pass public and sensitive metadata using `MetaFields.Builder`
* Authenticate end users with a backend-minted identity token
* Run a headless conversation and build your own native UI, such as an unread badge, on top of conversation events
* Store device tokens with the end user's sensitive metadata. To send push notifications, use webhooks and your push provider. See [Push notifications](/docs/channels/messaging/push-notifications).

> **Note**
>
> **From version 1.2.0, session state persists across an app force-quit.** This includes an active live agent handoff. See [Session persistence](/messaging/android/sdk-api-reference#session-persistence) for the storage details and the required sign-out step.

> The [Android SDK reference](/messaging/android/sdk-api-reference) covers all of the settings and actions available to developers of Android apps.

## Compatibility

The SDK supports Android 6.0 (API level 23) and up with Android System WebView 99 or later. Your app must use AndroidX and build with a Kotlin 2.2-compatible toolchain. See [Compatibility](/messaging/android/getting-started#compatibility) for the full requirements.

## Migrating from the existing Android SDK

If you currently use the existing Ada Android SDK (`support.ada.embed.*`), the new SDK is designed as a low-risk upgrade. Most apps only need a dependency swap and import renames. See [Upgrade from the existing Android SDK](/messaging/android/getting-started#upgrade-from-the-existing-android-sdk) for the migration steps.
