# Greetings

> **Tip**
>
> **Not sure where to begin?** Explore our [Getting started](/docs/welcome/getting-started) guidelines to set up your first AI Agent, review [Key concepts](/docs/welcome/key-concepts) to understand the essentials, or check out [Improvement tactics](/docs/welcome/improvement-tactics) to resolve issues and keep things running smoothly.

Once your AI Agent has some [Knowledge](/docs/knowledge) added, you can begin setting up automations to make it more effective.

Greetings shape the way the AI Agent greets end users and set the tone for the [conversation](/docs/optimization/conversations). This section explains [what Greetings are](/docs/automation/greetings/greeting-management), [how they work with variables](/docs/automation/greetings/greeting-management#variables), and [how to manage previous Greeting versions](/docs/automation/greetings/greeting-management#versions). Follow [best practices](/docs/automation/greetings/best-practices) by keeping greetings clear, on-brand, and up to date.

> **Info**
>
> Greetings are not supported on [Social](/docs/channels/social) channels or [Email](/docs/channels/email). On these channels, the user always sends the first message, and the AI Agent responds using its reasoning engine—not the configured Greeting.
>
> For example, if a user sends `hello`, the AI Agent may generate a greeting-like response, but this does not activate the Greeting or any associated flows.
