# Getting started

## Supported platforms

Check that adacli runs on your platform before you install it.

adacli runs on the following platforms:

* macOS on Apple Silicon and Intel
* Linux with glibc on x64 and arm64
* Windows on x64

Windows on Arm runs the x64 release through the built-in emulation. Alpine and other Linux distributions that use musl are not supported.

## Install

The recommended install method depends on your platform. adacli is one file and needs no other software.

| Platform                                   | Recommended method | Other method   |
| ------------------------------------------ | ------------------ | -------------- |
| [macOS](/adacli/getting-started/mac-os)    | Homebrew           | Install script |
| [Linux](/adacli/getting-started/linux)     | Install script     | Homebrew       |
| [Windows](/adacli/getting-started/windows) | Scoop              | Install script |

### Check the install

Confirm that adacli is on your `PATH`:

```bash
adacli --version
```

adacli shows its release number.

## Log in

adacli connects to one Agent at a time. Give the Agent before the command:

* **A handle**, for example `acme`. adacli connects to `acme.ada.support`.
* **A full domain**, for example `acme.eu.ada.support`. Use the full domain for an Agent outside the default region.

adacli uses device login. You approve a code in the Ada dashboard, on any device. The dashboard handles your password, SSO, and two-factor authentication.

**To log in with device login:**

1. Run the login command:

   ```bash
   adacli acme login
   ```

   adacli shows a code and a URL, and tries to open the URL in your browser.

2. Open the URL on any device, and sign in to the Ada dashboard.

3. On the **Authorize adacli on this machine?** page, type the code.

   The page does not fill in the code for you. Type it yourself.

4. Click **Approve**.

   adacli shows the email address you logged in with.

The code expires 10 minutes after you run the login command.

### Sessions

adacli stores your session in `~/.adacli/sessions.json`. The session ends after the inactivity timeout of your Agent, which is 24 hours by default. Each command extends the session, up to the absolute timeout, which is 10 days by default.

* To check your session, run `adacli acme status`.
* To log out, run `adacli acme logout`. Logging out of adacli does not log you out of the dashboard.

## Upgrade

adacli tells you when a newer release is available. Upgrade to the latest release to keep getting fixes.

**To upgrade adacli:**

1. Run the upgrade command:

   ```bash
   adacli upgrade
   ```

   adacli shows the upgrade command for the way you installed it.

2. Run the command that adacli shows.

For the upgrade command for each install method, see the page for your platform.

To stop the notice about new releases, set `ADACLI_NO_UPDATE_CHECK=1`.
